Bay Club members were treated to a talk by Dr. David MacKenzie, Music Director for the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra about the historical, cultural, and religious background of Johannes Brahms’ composition, A German Requiem, Op. 45. Dr. MacKenzie greeted members at the Golf House restaurant in advance of the NBSO Classical II “A Universal Music” performance at St. Anthony’s Church in New Bedford.

Bay Club Walking Group

Bay Club Fitness Director Dave Maloney has organized an informal walking club for members. During the fall and winter, walkers stroll the golf course and club property which includes more than 300 acres of conservation land. Walks last for approximately one hour each Monday and they are an ideal form of exercise to help control weight, improve balance and reduce the risk of heart disease and developing high blood pressure. Members of all ages have joined the group aiming to achieve a better lifestyle.

Visiting Author Robert Repetto

The Bay Club recently welcomed leading environmental economist Robert Repetto to the club. After a cocktail reception, Robert shared with members in plain language, the latest scientific understanding of climate change, how our actions are influencing the climate, and recommendations of what can be done to address this critical environmental issue in the national and international context. His most recent book, entitled “America’s Climate Problem: The Way Forward” was available for sale and signature. Members also enjoyed a spirited Q & A session after the talk.

Robert has taught on Economics and Sustainable Development at Yale, Harvard and the University of Colorado. He has served as a member of the National Research Council’s Board on Sustainable Development and as a member of the Environmental Economics Advisory Committee of EPA’s Science Advisory Board. He has worked on fisheries management issues at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute under a Pew Fellowship in Marine Conversation for three summers. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University and a M.Sc. degree from the London School of Economics.

The Story of the Cape Cod Canal

Samantha Gray, Park Ranger from the US Army Corps of Engineers gave members of the Bay Club a presentation on the rich history, unique features and vigilant operation of the Cape Cod Canal. The presentation included a twenty minute film entitled ‘Canal Story’ which provided a broad overview of the early Canal building under August Belmont’s private company; the Corps of Engineers’ massive rehabilitation of the bankrupt waterway during the 1930’s; the present-day operations of the computerized marine traffic control system and the Canal’s extensive recreational opportunities. Members enjoyed a light cocktail reception before the presentation which took place at the Sports and Activities Center.

Yeomans Repeats as Wessner Player of the Year!

Head Golf Professional Greg Yeomans captured the 2011 Cape Cod PGA Wessner Player of the Year title for a third time. Greg finished in first place well ahead of second place finisher Tom Tobey, Bay Pointe Country Club Head Professional. The Herman “Dutch” Wessner Award is presented annually to the Class “A” PGA professional who accumulates the most points based on individual performance in Chapter events. Greg earned two first place and three second place finishes in chapter events this season and has won the Wessner award consecutively since 2009.

Mexican Night at the Golf House

Members were recently treated to an evening of Mexican cuisine at the Golf House restaurant. Chef Mercer and his culinary team created a special menu of Rick Bayless Caesar Salad, Chicken Taco in Corn Tortilla Cup, Chili Rellenos with Pork Salsa, Potato and Cheese Quesadilla, and Toro Corn on the Cob using the freshest ingredients to best capture the delicacies of traditional Mexican cooking. The event was a sellout and members look forward to more theme nights to come!

Youth Speed and Agility Camp

Youth at the Bay Club have been able to take advantage of a new Youth Speed and Agility Camp every Tuesday and Friday. Under the direction of Fitness Director, Dave Maloney, this class is for boys and girls ranging in age from 11 to 17 years old. Dave utilizes body weight exercises, an agility ladder, core exercises, and dynamic range of motion drills to better prepare the young athlete for any sport. Smaller class sizes have allowed the students to receive one on one attention.

The Bay Club has been enjoying considerable interest in membership over the summer months. We have welcomed many new families as golf or social members, including those taking advantage of the newly introduced 40 and Under Memberships.

Bayside Building Spec Home on Split Rock Lane

Additionally, real estate activity has continued to build throughout the summer. Numerous homes are under construction, with three new homes under agreement to be built this year. The first is a 3,200 square foot spec home being built on Split Rock Lane adjacent to the 7th tee by Bayside Building. Priced at $1.35m, construction of this home is well underway and scheduled for completion by early winter. The second is a custom home in Prince Snow Village being built by RCR Development and is expected to be complete by next spring. Next under agreement is a home scheduled to be built in The Preserve by Abbott Development in the near future. Homes of similar design and architecture by Abbott are priced from $650,000, including home-site and landscaping.

2011 Davis Cup Social

The Bay Club recently hosted members from the Casino Tennis Club in Mattapoisett for the second annual Davis Cup tennis event. With ideal playing conditions, the round robin event was a huge success. The courts were decorated with the flags of the competing countries, USA, Italy, Spain, and Great Britain and the players showed their team spirit by dressing in their countries colors both of which set the tone for a wonderful morning of tennis. After working up an appetite, the players enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the Golf House restaurant. The festivities concluded with an international themed dinner at a member’s home.
