Dave Maloney, Fitness Director, Bay Club at Mattapoisett offers this months golf exercise of the month, “Spine Angle Turns”.

One of the most common swing faults shared by inconsistent golfers is coming out of your spine angle or loss of posture.

1)	Place one of the padded bars behind your upper back so it is crossing your shoulder blades.

2)	Now maintain your spine angle while you are turning into your backswing.

If you are coming out of your posture, the padded bar will be almost parallel to the ground at the top of your backswing.

As part of my New Year’s resolution to exercise more, I grabbed my husband and our hound and headed out to the 9th hole. Although the much hyped Christmas nor’easter did not actually produce an impressive accumulation, it did provide enough snow cover for a wonderful hike. Along the way we discovered the new burm constructed late last fall on Hole #11, and I secretly crossed my fingers hoping it was the snow cover making it look so ominous. We also paused at the new tee box on Hole #9 which has my husband itching for Spring; I on the other hand observed that the drive over the water now looks impossibly long.

When we finished our hike, my husband chose to head to the club’s Indoor Golf Practice Center while I enjoyed a visit to the steam room at the Sports & Activities Center. Our well exercised dog relished a nice nap in the car.

Using my iPhone camera for the photo shot and the angle of the sun doesn’t give quality to the view, however I decided it would be nice to share. For a better look at the club in the warmer weather, please view our slideshow!

1. Set the functional trainer arm to be level with your chest height while sitting on a stability ball.

2. Lift one leg off the ground and rotate as far as possible across your body.

3. Perform 2 sets of 15 repetitions with your left leg elevated and repeat with your right leg elevated.

4. You just want enough weight, so that you feel your core is needed to stabilize you on the ball.

Statistics show that over 70 percent of all cardiac and breathing emergencies occur in the home, when a family member is present and available to help the victim. Therefore, the time spent learning these skills could help save a loved one. The class will be taught by American Heart Association Certified Instructor Beth Oelson.
